Three pet dogs abandoned for weeks, two rescued, one dead amidst COVID-19 Lockdown.

Wagholi, 30 March 2020: Three pet dogs abandoned for weeks, two rescued, one dead amidst COVID-19 Lockdown. The RESQCT team got a report on the helpline that three dogs were in a bad condition after being abandoned in a home for many days.

Neha Panchamia, managing committee member of Pune District SPCA and founder and president of RESQ Charitable Trust said, “Covid-19 did not do this, but unspeakable human negligence did. The RESQ team received a call on Sunday morning about three dogs abandoned in a house in a society in Wagholi. The person who reported the incident told us that no one had been in the house for many days. I informed my seniors at the Pune District SPCA, the member secretary and district collector Naval Kishore Ram, who put me in touch with the superintendent of police, who gave us permission to enter and rescue the animals,”

One dog, an old Pug, who seemed to have bled out of his mouth, lay dead and completely stiff. The second, a Labrador Retriever, had a broken water pot stuck around his neck. The dog must have been so thirsty that it jumped on the clay water pot to get water and may have stuck his head in for the last sips and gotten stuck in it. Obviously, he had managed to break the pot by thrashing around, but the neck of the pot remained stuck in his neck. The third dog, a young Golden Retriever, was found cold, scared and covered in ticks. Both the dogs that were alive were completely emaciated and so thin we could count their ribs.

Animals cannot speak but today was one of those times when I could see in their eyes and in the wag of their tails how happy they finally were.
