About the Project
Project Maya by Kartik Foundation
A collaborative initiative between Kartik Foundation, RESQ Charitable Trust and the Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pune District SPCA).
For decades, lakhs of animals have been traded as pets and the pet industry is a 280 crore plus industry in India (2020). To meet the increasing demand for pets, a large number of animal breeders, traders and pet shops indulge in trade and activities completely unregulated without maintaining any standards of animal welfare until newer laws and Rules under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 were notified in 2017 and 2018.
Project Maya aims to prevent the suffering of pet animals in the Indian Pet Trade in Pune, Maharashtra by providing a platform that helps the relevant governing bodies regulate pet shops, breeders and promotes education and awareness to pet owners.
To bring about a change for animal lives, the involvement and participation of the community and government are key.
Through Project Maya we plan to :
Educate the Demanders - Pet Owners
Empower them with information and resources
Access to Directories for Approved/Regulated Suppliers
Improve the Suppliers - Pet Shops and Breeders
Public Directory of Approved/ Blacklisted Suppliers
Resources for improving Pet Shop and Breeder Standards
Reduce Animal Cruelty - Empower Public Citizens
Citizen Reporting Portal
Access to Resources to understand animals rights and laws
We thank the Kartik Foundation and its trustees for supporting this initiative that is going to impact the lives of thousands of animals.
